Spring Plumbing Prep | Simple Steps to Prevent Water Damage
Spring arrives in March, and we are all looking forward to getting back outdoors!
The increase in water usage during the spring months, along with possible damage from winter freezes and the coming spring rains, can cause plumbing systems to be overloaded.
These routine outdoor plumbing maintenance suggestions can help to keep your plumbing systems healthy and prevent costly damage.
- Test irrigation backflows and outdoor faucets: With the fluctuation in temperatures over the winter, outdoor pipes may be damaged or dirty. Check all sprinklers, irrigation lines and faucets for leaks and clear any debris that may have built up.
- Clean gutters and downspouts: Remove all debris from gutters and downspouts and check for any damage that would allow water to build up around the foundation of your home.
- Test the sump pump: Should water get into the basement, you want to be sure this system is running efficiently. This is also a good time to clean the sump pump to maximize efficiency.
One other thing to consider this spring, is requesting a second meter for outdoor water use. Spring is a great time to do this before garden and lawn seasons arrive and water usage continues to increase. A second meter is a great way to reduce your sewage costs overall.
